The Antecedence of Faith

Minister: Pastor Bola Bello

As at the time when God spoke to Abram, God only gave a promise and nothing more, not even a specific location as to where he was to go. What then could have made Abram choose to take God for His word and believe Him completely? Was there perhaps anything he considered that must have made him take that bold step in obeying God?

Often and again, we refer to God as the “God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”, but is God exclusively only for these people? No! God is the God of the living and can be our God also if our relationship with Him is faith-based. Faith is nothing abstract and neither is it a feeling. Faith goes beyond the reasoning of man and human intelligence. Faith from any man will be difficult. So anyone who must walk in any level of faith must have an antecedence (a root). Abraham’s faith started after the promise was made, but there was definitely something that prompted him into taking that bold step. His faith was not borne out of the abstract; something preceded it.

The faith of Isaac and Jacob were hinged on that of their father Abraham, but who discipled Abraham? From whom did he learn how to exercise faith in God?  Who taught him? Abraham must have heard about the faith of the fathers before him including Enoch, Noah and Abel. He learnt how Noah chose to believe God amidst many factors. Abel also gave what God wanted when he gave a prophetic first fruit offering. This was how Abraham also learnt about offerings, so it was easy for him to give up Isaac when God demanded for him.

In the same vein, we too must have antecedence for our faith, else we would make a wreck of The Faith that we have been called into. Not having antecedence is one of the reasons many have moved away from The Faith. The issue of faith starts from God down to man. God does not prefer one person over the other; whoever follows the principles of God will surely have the stipulated results.
